Delivering on our promise

The V236-15.0 MW™ was the first ever 15 MW turbine to be introduced to the market in February 2021. We follow the journey as the prototype is developed this year.

The V236-15.0 MW™ prototype development work is progressing as planned across Vestas’ R&D and production sites in Denmark. The installation of the prototype turbine will begin in the second half of 2022. The on-track development of the V236-15.0 MW™ proves Vestas’ commitment to driving the offshore wind industry forward by offering customers a product which delivers excellent performance while reducing the number of turbines at park level.

The V236-15.0 MW™ prototype will be installed at the Østerild National test center for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark. During the initial period of operations, Vestas will collect data needed to obtain a Type Certificate, a key step in reaching serial production of the turbine in 2024.

Stretching 280m into the air with a production output of 80 GWh/year, the prototype will be the tallest and most powerful wind turbine in the world once installed.

Blades

At Vestas’ factory in Nakskov, Denmark, specialists are developing the blades for the V236-15.0 MW™ prototype using the mold which was built at the factory in Lem, Denmark. The factory in Nakskov currently employees around 460 experts in their field. Since the factory opened in 1999, producing blades for the V66 turbine, the facilities have constantly expanded to accommodate the increasing length of modern blades. In addition to the 80m blades of the V174-9.5 MW™, the production halls are now capable of handling the 115.5 meter blades of the V236-15.0 MW™ prototype.

Nacelle

The completion of the V236-15.0 MW™ prototype nacelle at the factory in Lindø, port of Odense is the culmination of the dedicated efforts of a wide range of Vestas teams. The serial production of V236-15.0 MW nacelles will also take place at the Lindø Factory from 2024. The factory currently produces nacelles for V164-10 MW and V174-9.5 MW wind turbines and has delivered over 700 nacelles to the market leveraging the expertise and experience developed over the past ten years. Before V236-15.0 MW serial production commences, Vestas will modify and expand the Lindø facility to accommodate the larger components.
